We can do this...together!
Singing in front of someone new can feel a little intimidating sometimes. That is why it is very important to me, as your teacher, to provide a fun and positive learning environment! My home studio is a safe space: where creativity and vulnerability are encouraged and embraced. I do my very best to make sure my students feel comfortable as we learn repertoire that is interesting and challenging for them.
How I Structure my 30 Minute Lessons
5 minutes of vocal warm-ups: to wake up the voice and teach foundational vocal techniques, breathing, flexibility, and pitch accuracy.
5 minutes of sight-singing/musicianship: familiarize students with singing scales, arpeggios and reading/vocalizing written music. This includes practicing part independence, harmony, and ear training. As well as transferring specific techniques to selected repertoire.
20 minutes of rehearsing repertoire: I work with my students to select repertoire that they enjoy! I have found that students are much more motivated to practice outside of lesson time if they are singing something that sparks their interests. Although I sometimes assign music based on certain skills that we are rehearsing, I still aim to choose songs that they enjoy.
Students are always welcome to record their lessons. This is a great way to practice during the week. It can be very valuable to hear how they sang something, how I correct it and the result afterward.
I ask all my students to come prepared with a binder to store the music that we work on together. I encourage them to never remove a song from their binder, even if we haven't worked on it for a while. It can be very rewarding to pull out something old that we haven't touched for a while to recognize how much they have progressed.
